Chemical Peels

Based on the body's ability to heal itself, chemicals are applied to the face that gently peel the top layer revealing smoother, supple skin beneath. What differentiates one chemical peel from another tends to be how deep the chemicals are allowed to penetrate the skin.

What is a superficial chemical peel?

  • Healing: Up to 7 days

  • Our aestheticians recommend: Light peels are great for a refreshed glow and maintenance during the spring and summer months.

  • For best results: Repeat chemical peels every 4 to 6 weeks for 3 to 6 treatments. Follow-up treatments may be necessary depending on skin concerns.

Superficial chemical peels are used to treat uneven skin tone and fine lines in otherwise healthy, vibrant skin. Since superficial chemical peels only remove the top layer of skin, recovery time tends to be faster and results tend to be more subtle than medium depth chemical peels. Ideal candidates are people with fair- to medium-toned skin although those with darker skin may be candidates for this type of procedure. Most patients report a mild sunburn feeling and in most cases, recovery takes up to 7 days.

What is a medium depth chemical peel?

  • Healing: 7 to 10 days

  • Our aestheticians recommend: Medium-depth peels are more aggressive and are recommended during the colder months (fall and winter). They can improve fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, age spots, and discoloration.

  • For best results: Repeat chemical peels every 6 to 12 weeks for 3 to 6 treatments. Follow-up treatments may be necessary depending on skin concerns.

Medium depth chemical peels are targeted at removing more than just the top layer of skin. Medium depth chemical peels often result in swelling or discomfort that can last from one to two weeks. Although medium depth peels are more effective at improving stubborn lines and wrinkles, most need to be repeated to see consistent results.

Sunlight Protocol

Whether you opt for a superficial or medium depth chemical peel, we advise minimal sun exposure for 7 to 10 days as the skin heals. Afterward, outdoor activities are safe with frequent sunscreen application (every two hours). We highly recommend sunscreen and an antioxidant such as our SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic serum.
